Summertime Excerpt
He takes a step toward me and my heart stutters in my chest. “Because there’s one thing about players you may not realize…”
“What?” I whisper.
“We know better than anyone when we fall.”
He allows his words to sink in, and I want to ask exactly what he means by that.
He leans in like he knows what I’m thinking and whispers in my ear, “And I haven’t even put my best efforts in yet.” He takes a step back and his eyes are light. It’s impossible to look away. “Now that you’re free, maybe I’ll start…when you’re ready, that is.”
“What makes you think I will be?”
He puts his fingers on the pulse of my neck. “The way this is quickening right here. And the way we keep being faced with adversity and riding it out…together. I'm willing to keep proving myself."
