Launches, festivals and in-conversation events
Dear Friends,
Every year, winter takes me by surprise and, sure enough, this week I've been gobsmacked by the cold. As a rule, I then contemplate getting a new heater but by the time my mind is finally made up it's already August, winter is almost over and, once again, the heater purchase is deferred. Last year, though, I finally followed through, and already the winter is promising to be a cosier one. Hope you are staying warm, wherever you are.
I have another week of interviews coming up: Bryan Brown and Chris Hammeron Sunday, Eleanor Limprecht on Monday and Jackie Bailey on Tuesday. Hope you can join me at one - or all - of the events!
Right before Thursday Book Club tomorrow night, internationally bestselling author Adrian McKinty will be in conversation with fellow crime writer, Tim Ayliffe. If you'd like to be in the draw to win tickets to this online eventpresented by BAD Sydney Crime Writers Festival, simply reply to this email with your book recommendation.
NEW RELEASE RECOMMENDATION

THE PREMONITIONS BUREAU
A True Story
Sam Knight https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/the-premonitions-bureau-sam-knight-9780571374830.do
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- This is the true story of John Barker, a British psychiatrist who began to investigate cases of people who reportedly had premonitions of disasters. There are some quite moving and eccentric stories beginning with the Aberfan disaster in Wales. As to the veracity of the project as a whole, which may appear to be dubious to say the least, well, that's up to the reader to decide. Knight details these stories including Barker’s own personal battles with a compassionate and intriguing manner. FOR KIDS

A FIRST BOOK OF AUSTRALIAN FROG CALLS
Fred Van Gessel, Gerry Swan
https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/a-first-book-of-australian-frog-calls-9781925546767.do
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Fred is famous in birding circles for his amazing and extensive knowledge of bird calls, and has produced sound books on common Australian birds for young naturalists, so it is a delight to have a book that introduces frog calls to them as well. Twelve species are covered; each page has compact information covering facts like habitat, distribution and habits alongside clear photographs, and a sound button that reproduces the calls. Appeals to young and old, going by the customers I see who are attracted to the book! Lindy Jones
