Values
People will change their values instead of chaging their behaviour.
Values are “One’s judgement of what is important in life.”
When my friend first told me about the concept I got it but wasn’t sure how it showed up in life.
Until one incident;
It was already late. As I was getting ready for sleep I heared screaming at my neighbours apartment.
Which is just fine we are all humans.
Then I heared a woman coming outside threatening the guy that she was going to call the police and then the door slamed and the guy went inside.
I noticed that the woman was outside, standing in the cold.
I really wanted to ask her to come in but at the same time I was hesitant.
It was a big discomfrot for me because I thought that she might have screamed at me as well.
And then it hit me that for a second I was ready to change my value rather than my behavior/thinking.
It was aligned with my values that when I think someone needs my help I give it to them.
But becasue it might have been uncomfortable for me for a second I thought about not inviting her inside.
I opened the door anyways, asked her if she needed to sit down or wanted a tea.
To my surprise she was actually pleased with my act. I let her in gave her water and she left when the police came.
We all have our pricniples and values in life. We have to understand them and know them.
We have to put our values first and live according to them.
Little side note, it would be amazing if at the same time we will be open to changing our values. We all learn and realize that sometimes what we think is right isn’t always so.
Write down you values. Sometiems what we know is hidden until we shine a light on it.
Values are like lighthouses; they are signals giving us direction, meaning, and purpose.
