Why are we voting on Thursday in the UK?

Elections to appoint local councillors will be held in London on Thursday 5 May, but will also be held in parts of England as well as in Wales and Scotland. In Northern Ireland, voters will have to choose who will form the country’s next parliament. In the UK, when voters are called to go to the polls, it is always on a Thursday, and has been since the 1930s. But why is this so in the UK when other countries Europe vote mostly on Sundays?
