EP. 141: How to Stop Running from Your Story with Francine Rivers

APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | STITCHER SUBSCRIBE HERE LEAVE A REVIEW “All that glitters is not gold.” (As nice as that would be…) Are you familiar with that phrase? It is actually derived from a 16th-century line by William Shakespeare, meaning that not everything that looks precious or true turns out to be so. Isn’t it interesting that all these years later, this general principle still holds true? Arguably even more so today. If we are not careful, we can be blinded by the shiny, glittery new thing…new trend… new rage. Everywhere we look, every online scroll, every day. So, let me ask you – are you carrying around any ‘glitter’ yourself today? (Don’t worry. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… this a no judgment zone. I am right there with you.) Maybe your ‘glitter’ is wanting to feel worthy and loved, yet you find yourself seeking these affirmations in all the wrong places.  Perhaps, your ‘glitter’ is wanting to create the seemingly perfect life on the outside, yet your striving and highlight reels are actually hiding the true you. Or, could it be that you long for the ‘glitter’ you see in everyone else’s life (fame, fortune, success) that you can’t see the true gold that you currently possess in your own life? No matter what the case may be, today’s guest – Francine Rivers – is here to remind us that even though our circumstances may change and glittery things are fleeting, there is one truth that we can always rely on. That we can always depend on. One truth that is the true gold standard.  “God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.” Romans 8:28In Francine’s book, “Redeeming Love” (a timeless Christian fiction novel turned major motion picture) there is a scene that will forever stand out to me.  It’s a powerful moment with one of the main characters, Angel. She is in the river, using river stones to try and wash herself clean. Washing and scrubbing her body to the point that her skin is bleeding and raw.  Wow. What a metaphor! Can you relate? The feeling that you just have to get out of your own skin. Maybe that you don’t belong. The need to wash away parts of your own story that you don’t want others to know. The desire to change your truth – in order to shed these scales, these outer layers before you can be washed clean enough… …before you can feel worthy enough.  We think we can do the washing on our own. We think we can achieve our way into worth on our own.  Well, I have news today.  We can’t! (And that is a good thing!) Only God can do the washing.Only God can do the cleansing.Only God can do the redeeming. Our worth is not determined by our achievements. Our worth is found in the Lord.

And, not because of anything that we have done. It is solely because of what Jesus did for us on the Cross.

If you have ever felt betrayed or lonely, this episode is for you. If you have ever longed to feel loved and accepted, this episode is for you. If you have ever tried to strive your way into worth, this episode is for you. Friends, it will be impossible to listen to today’s conversation with Francine and not walk away moved.
