Connection or Coincidence?
The Maha-Lakshmi – the Hindu Goddess of wisdom, strength, beauty, luck, sovereignty, and splendour – is known to take different forms. Forms, not Vahanas (or deific vehicles), like peacocks and other animals. In Hindu belief, she is said to take the form of a Bat (the flying mammal); link in description. I wonder if Bob Kane (artist) and Bill Finger (writer) who created the fictional comic-book character Batman knew way back when about the Maha-Lakshmi taking this form. In ancient Indian texts, it is understood and accepted that seeing a bat is a sign of coming prosperity (loosely defined). The bat is still worshipped in several parts of India as a form of the Maha-Lakshmi. And we see Bruce Wayne as a character being wealthy and prosperous, adopting the Batman as his strong alter-ego to fight crime in the corrupt city of Gotham using wisdom (A distinct Maha-Saraswati trait here) gained from years of training, and not a small amount of luck helping him along. It is also curious that while most people presume bats are a source of disease, they also emit chemicals that have proven to kill epidemic-causing bacteria; link in description. This is again similar to how the Maha-Lakshmi bestows blessings strong enough to remove obstacles that keep people from receiving wealth and other good things, and akin to how Batman's appearance in Gotham gradually started ridding the city of its criminal rot. Also, one of the Maha-Lakshmi's alternate names is 'Bhuvaneshwarya' which has strange tonal and syllabic links to the name 'Bruce Wayne'. Then there are the colours black, blue, and yellow, three hues sacred to the Maha-Lakshmi, but also seen on batman. So what's the link between the ones who created Batman and the pre-Vedic worship of one of India's most supreme Goddesses?
