Change the World
Do you sometimes feel helpless in the face of overwhelming odds? When I look at what is happening in our world today, it is definitely more than I can take on.
No sooner than the world is beginning to conquer Covid 19 than one country invades its neighbour. Those who believe in the power of prayer can pray that evil is thwarted, bound, thrown out or whatever and that peace will conquer the spirit of war. Some may be able to provide practical help if they have families in danger. And, of course, we can donate to one of the good charities that are helping the situation. We can all do something. And, to use a quotation from
"‘All that it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.’
“Ways You Can Change the World.” I saw an article in a magazine and eagerly read it. I pass on some of the ideas which won’t change the war but which may help us to improve our own small corners and have some impact on our world in general.
Grow your own food and buy local produce, organic if possible. For many years now, I’ve tried to help ‘our farmers’. You don’t need me to say why this is becoming more important than ever.
Garden for the bees, the birds and the insects. If you have young children or grandchildren they might love to see an insect ‘hotel’ and places where wildlife can exist. https://www.google.com/search?q=insec...
Buy fewer clothes and shop more mindfully. Again, I’m sure I don’t need to expand on the reasons for this.
I add one of my own ideas for people who have too little time: I throw or give away one item per month. It’s in my diary so that I don’t forget it. It just makes me concentrate on something I don’t need nor use but which might be useful to someone else or absolutely no use whatsoever and can go in the dustbin. A nearby church has started to have bric-a-brac sales each month to raise money and, in passing, I have been dropping off a few items. We each benefit.
I’d be delighted if you add your ideas for improving a small corner of our world.

Being purposeful in encouraging other writers, readers, bloggers, and commenters is my little corner. When someone posts a win, it means that they're proud of themselves because something happened or someone else supported them - it takes a few seconds to add Congratulations!, a tiny bit longer to say something encouraging and relevant.You're right, it's a great idea. I remind myself to remember how good it makes ME feel when someone else makes that effort.

Thanks for reminding me that even if I think something is true, I need to check it carefully. I was so happy recently to find that something attributed to PD James is actually written in her 'autobiography,' a diary of one year. Because it's going to make a very good epigraph for one of my last chapters in the WIP.
There are so many good quotations around and I think it's good to use thoughts which are well expressed and encouraging.
Clothes are something I buy rarely. Yesterday I was wearing a jumper my daughter had when she was 14 and then passed it on to me. She's 46 now. Perhaps it's being Yorkshire, but we're the people who like to make things last. Make do and mend.

Charity shops are wonderful! I'm trying to think of what they call them in Australia - it's something different. I expect the US has a pet name for them too.
