Morgana had tipped them off, informing the guards of Marietta’s return. Marietta knew Morgana couldn’t be trusted, right from the very start, but her mother had insisted that they stay with her. Look where that got her now. Marietta growled and threw herself against the woman like a tornado knocking down a row of houses. They both rolled against the hardwood, flailing their arms at each other, before suddenly stopping at the door when the man walked in. Now that she was closer, Marietta recognized him as Nicolo, the same man Cross entrusted. A double betrayal, all in one night.
She watched in defeat as Nicolo ordered his army to drag Marietta away, tossing aside some furniture and clothing that stood in their way.

“Morgana! Morgana! Don’t let them take me, please! Stop them!” she cried out to Morgana, who could only stare at her in disapproval and disgust as she closed the door behind them.

It wasn’t until she reached the footsteps of the castle that she realized Morgana had not gone after her. She cried out bitter tears, but the men showed her no remorse. Nicolo, in particular, simply looked revolted and on the verge of attacking her at any minute. Oh, such irony that she was the one they were mad at when they worked as slaves to a ruthless tyrant.

It wasn’t until they reached the steps of Queen Azra’s tower did Marietta realize what her punishment was going to be. She tried to kick and scream, anything she could to escape her impending fate, but the more she struggled, the more she was held back with greater strength until her skin turned purple and her breath staggered.

“Your Majesty,” was all she could say upon being thrown at the queen’s feet, blood spilling from her mouth.
