The year is 2844. The world is quite different from how it was long ago. While many thought flying cars and talking robots would be considered “fun,” that wasn’t the case in the 2800s. There had been a time when trinkets and materialism were prevalent, but that was before a witch brought about the end of the world.
Now, I don’t know the whole story. I was only a thought in my mother’s mind when this was all happening, but from the stories she’s been telling me, there was a woman who had come to enslave the world and bend it all to her will.
The world I live in is small, I’ll admit. There aren’t a lot of people, and there aren’t many kids my age. The world is still just as frozen as the world was in the stories my mother is telling me, so there must be some truth to them. Even though she’s telling me these tales, she still says that I’m not allowed to tell anyone else about them, because the stories of the witch are a sacred and feared topic. I don’t know why that is, when initially, she told me that there was no truth to them, but I didn’t want to lose the opportunity to hear about these frightening horrors, so I kept my mouth shut.
Growing up, I noticed pieces of her story that were true. There were old buildings with faces of people she told me were once famous. Faces of the men and women that made up the government, that ruled the world according to their plan.
She also told me that there used to be so many more people in this world than there are today, and that they used to be everywhere. There wasn’t a single place or area you could look where you’re able to see a space clear of at least one person.
Living in the world that I’m in, where there are so few people, but so many spaces where people could be, it’s easy for me to imagine individuals swarming around. I imagine them shopping, hanging out with friends and family, going to work, or simply going for a walk.
It had always been fascinating to me to think about all the buildings around me, filled with people. People swarming in and out as they go about their days, weaving seamlessly in and out of the flow of others. To me, it would’ve been a beautiful sight to see, day in and day out, as people minded their own business but were also hyper aware that they were around others and had to be careful not to bump into them.
