Waste Not, Want Not

The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.
Proverbs 12:27

I enjoy hunting and fishing. As a teen, nothing was quite as tasty as a fresh squirrel that Mom would fry up. There was a sense of satisfaction in knowing that you were the contributor of dinner's main course! We were raised to respect the adage of "Waste not, Want not". If we killed it or caught it, we ate it. Catch and release had not caught on during my teen years.

Solomon has similar guidance in the verse above. If you treat your substance as precious, you will not waste it. If we are good stewards, we will cherish each and every gift from God and use it wisely. And it doesn't just apply to food. Friends are a good example. Do you cherish the friendships given to you? Do you allow them to waste away or do you nurture them?

Take a moment today to thank God for your blessings and vow to use them wisely!
