FINDING INSPIRATION

Sometimes I love to write with no distraction or background noise. However that is rarely the case. Why? Because it is hard to stay motivated when you are focused solely on a white computer screen for a long period of time.

I would say that 90% of the time I write I am listening to music. The great thing is that music is more than a way to keep you from becoming bored. It is an inspiration, a driving factor, like a soundtrack to a film. Because music expresses emotion, it adds to the intensity of the work you are writing. Often the most important and intense moments in my books would not be there if I did not have the extra motivation from a great song playing.

Other things can be inspiring too. Maybe music is not your thing - that is ok. Do what works for you, but try to find something that will keep you in a creative mood. Often while writing, I have a statue of a knight or a cross at my desk. It is great to be able to look up and see something that gives me a feeling of confidence, power, or any other emotion. In turn this gives me the drive to what I wrote.

That said, inspirations can become a distraction as well. It is easy, especially if you listen on YouTube or Spotify, to constantly be looking for new songs. Sadly that can take us away from writing, and I am super guilty of this one. Finding music is great, don't get me wrong, but we should always have the music picked out before we start. There is a time for making a playlist later. For now, focus on writing during your writing time.

Additionally, I think the type of music we listen to makes a difference. Everyone has their own preference, but if I was to pick the best kind of music for me when writing, it's film soundtracks. There are no lyrics to cause confusion while editing, and soundtracks fit well into a story. If the music does have lyrics, they should reflect what you are writing about. It will make a difference. In fact, my brother was able to tell me what music I was listening to without my telling him by just reading a draft I sent him!

Lastly, it you are having a tough time bringing something to life like a landscape, an animal, or building, look at some pictures of something similar to what you are describing while you write.
