The End of the World in Film

Post-apocalypse has been done to death, but much rarer is a film that captures the final, fitful moments leading up to the end of the world… whatever that may be. 2012, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, 12 Monkeys and Dr. Strangelove all glimpse human (also, simian) approaches to coping with the oncoming end of it all. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy goes one step further and looks at life after the disintegration of the Earth. Share your favorite films that had the guts to go beyond turning the world into a mere desert wasteland, and destroyed it altogether instead.
