  Dear Friends,
Like many of you, I've been working from home more than ever since last year. Now that my kids have gone back to school, this is the first time since June that I've had the house to myself. The pleasure of writing in solitude is something I'd almost forgotten. I hope you've been managing to get the right mix of company and solitude since things have started to open up again.

I'm really looking forward to having Graeme Friedman as my guest this week at Thursday Book Club. Graeme is a  psychologist and author whose novel, The Fossil Artist, was shortlisted for the 2011 Commonwealth Writers' Prize. We'll be talking about his new novel, What The Boy Hears When The Girl Dreams.  To join us, simply click on this link on Thursday at 8pm: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/8521042343.

  NEW RELEASE RECOMMENDATION

 TREASURE AND DIRT

Chris Hammer
https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/treasure-and-dirt-9781760877606.do
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Ivan Lucic is rather surprisingly for a Sydney detective of his seniority, sent to investigate a murder in the opal mining town of Finnigans Gap. A miner was found crucified in his underground claim, but nothing is as straightforward as it seems. The town is verging on the edge of lawlessness, the young local policewoman charged with investigating the crime is out of her depth in more ways than one, there's a rather sinister messianic sect on the outskirts, and there is a billionaire mining magnate sniffing around. Lucic is hiding a few secrets himself… Another wonderfully convoluted and satisfying rural noir novel from Hammer, with a cast of colourful characters, moral dilemmas and twisty plotting. This is a standalone (though who knows? Maybe Lucic will turn up again, he certainly has more stories in him!) I think Hammer just gets better and better with each book he writes…  Lindy

MY BROTHER BEN
Peter Carnavas https://www.abbeys.com.au/book/my-brother-ben-9780702263330.do
ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Luke adores his big brother Ben, who can do anything and isn't afraid and is his best friend. Ben is adventurous and caring, particularly now Dad has left and Mum is tired from working all the time, and whilst the boys are almost polar opposites, what they do have in common is a dream. They want a boat so they can explore their local creek; Ben wants to go fishing in the fabled Pocket, and Luke wants to see all the birds. Luke has an affinity with a rescued magpie who stays around their house, and is a talented artist who likes to sketch what he sees. When the local council announces a competition to celebrate the area, and the prize is a boat, both boys decide to win it. But Ben has just started high school, and made a friend of the new girl on the street, and it  seems he doesn't have the time for Luke anymore. Worse, it looks like he's sneaking out at night and Luke feels betrayed... This is a positively beautiful story that celebrates the bonds of brothers without being unrealistic, the way change can be upsetting but also enabling - and the joys of birdwatching! Carnavas' best book yet. Ages 9-12  Lindy
