THE OUTLAWS SCARLETT AND BROWNE by @jonathan.stroud is shortlisted for the Young Adult Fiction Award at this year’s Books Are My Bag Readers Awards. Get to know him better in our exclusive Q&A.

💫 What book is currently in your bag?

Escape Room by Christopher Edge and Wildlord by Philip Womack

💫 What’s the last great book that you read?

The Far Side of the Dollar by Ross MacDonald

💫 Do you have a favourite bookshop?

Too many to mention. As a child I was transfixed by @childrenheffers in Cambridge, because it had a dungeon door with a skeleton inside it.

💫 Do you have any comfort reads?

Lyonesse by Jack Vance; The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by A Conan Doyle; The Code of the Woosters by P G Wodehouse; The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.

💫 Describe your ideal writing experience

Sitting down at my desk at 8 a.m. and losing myself in the process until, at maybe 4 p.m. I get up with 5 good pages written. Coming out blinking into the light, knowing that the book is just that little bit closer to being done.

💫 Describe your ideal reading experience

Sitting down in an armchair with a book in hand, a cup of tea or whisky (depending on the hour) at my side, a quiet house and unlimited time ahead. NB. This almost never happens.

💫 What book will you be nominating for the Books Are My Bag Readers’ Choice Award?

Prisoners of Time by Christopher Clark. Fascinating and beautifully written historical essays that opened new worlds to me.

💫 What was the first book you bought with a National Book Token?

A Book of Dragons by Ruth Manning-Sanders. No regrets there.

💫 What books will you be gifting this festive season?

Man in a Blue Scarf by Martin Gayford. The best book on art I’ve ever read.
