Special Agent Don Trask is in a prairie town in western Minnesota in the dead of winter. Trask has been sent by the governor to put his seal of approval on the identification of a body, the adult daughter of a prominent Minnesota politician.

Trask expects a quick trip, but some things about the woman's death don't add up. Small things, but enough to cause Trask to dig a little deeper. Deeper than he should.
