From Goddess to Beldam Witch: Why Good Witches turn bad
It’s no wonder why witches have such a bad name. The indoctrination starts in early childhood, where virtually every villain, or villainess is a vane, mean, washed up witch. There was the Wicked Stepmother in Cinderella, the highly conceited Evil Queen in Snow White. The wicked witch Evillen in The Wiz, and we can’t forget Ursula from The Little Mermaid. Not to mention that there are all the horrific tales of witches turning evil, and ugly, and demonic. They started off nice, vowing that they would never curse, hex, or bring harm to other individuals. But once they get a taste of power, they just get turned out. Next thing you know, they’re unrecognizable, even to themselves. They’ve fallen off of their path and can’t seem to understand why they lost everything including: their families, friends, money, and even their beauty. Truth be told that magic when used ineffectively can drive good a woman mad. And the sea witch Ursula, paints the cautionary tale of how magic can you destroy even the holiest of souls.
Ursula the Sea Witch
Ursula by far is my favorite villainess, second only to the Evilene from The Wiz. I like Ursula because she is not conventionally pretty. In fact, she is a big and beautiful woman, and she seems to be proud of it. Also, I liked Ursula because she seems to represent all the women who don’t have the privilege of being beautiful. Women, who don’t have pretty privilege have to find other ways to gain power, and in some cases, fame. However, they have to be careful not to step on the toes of men, while doing so. And this my friends was Ursula’s problem. She was born bright, bubbly, smart, and witty. Yet, she was plain and knew that she wasn’t going to amass a great deal of fame or fortune through marriage. Instead, she used her charms to win over her ancestor Poseidon. Poseidon couldn’t let Ursula rule over the entire Atlantica Kingdom, after all he promised his heir King Trident that he would have that honor. So, they made a truce, they would each have equal parts of the sea. And both King Trident and sea witch Ursula would be able to perform magic. King Trident would have his magic trident of course, and Ursula would have her magic seashell.
Real witches have a great deal of power
But Ursula wasn’t happy with this arrangement. So, she devised a plan to replicate King Trident’s magical trident, with the intentions of robbing him of all of his power. She was somewhat successful, until she was caught and banished to the underbelly of the sea world. Alone, isolated, and almost going mad, Ursula befriends two eels who later become her beloved pets and trusted companions. Over time, the eels become her eyes and ears and began to do her beckoning. They worked to lure merfolk into Ursula’s underground pit. It is here where she performs her magic, concocting potions and casting spells. She made unfavorable deals with mermaid and mermen, enslaving their souls and entrapping them in her own horrific garden of lost souls. In her madness, Ursula planned to create a huge army of sea urchins, and use this army to overtake the Atlantica palace, taking down King Trident once for all.
Ursula is the best witch in fairy tales
However, she comes across an amazing opportunity when she learns that Ariel, king Trident’s favorite and youngest daughter has fallen in love with a human prince. She then devises another self-serving plan, where Ariel would be allowed to be human for three days. While she’s is human, she must convince the Prince to kiss her. However, it can’t be just any old kiss, it has to be a true kiss of love. And No, Ariel can’t use her beautiful voice to win him over. Instead, she will only be able to use her looks. And if Ariel fails at getting the Prince to fall in love with her, her soul would be Ursula’s forever. Ariel signs the deal, and her voice is captured in Ursula’s magical shell. Ariel, lost in love, takes the deal and gets her sea legs. She is found by the prince and the courting starts. And there is even one scene where Sabastian and the gang almost get Ariel and the Prince to kiss. Only Ursula’s eels are watching and ruin the entire mood. Later, Ursula decides that she needs to step things up a bit, and thus decides to enchant the prince with Ariel’s beautiful voice.
Why Witchcraft can sometimes turn bad
With the Prince under Ursula’s spell, she convinces the Prince to marry her, thus causing Ariel to run out of time. She is dragged back to the sea to be Ursula’s slave, but is intercepted by King Trident. King Trident vows to take Ariel’s place, thus allowing Ursula to gain hold of the trident. This is when she finally becomes queen of the sea. Ursula swings the trident to destroy Ariels friends and misfires, attacking and killing her two favorite eels. Anger and so enraged she stirs up a wicked storm, only to have the Prince stir a sunken ship into her belly. She electrocutes herself and dies. The contract that she has with her garden of trapped souls is released and they become mermaids again. King Trident gets his power and trident back. And Ariel gets her legs, her man, and a happy ending.
Why witches get a bad reputation
Now the craziest thing about this story is that Ariel and Ursula are alike in many ways. They both are rebels, and they both want to challenge the statues que. Ariel broke the rules by making contact with a human. And Ursula broke the rules by stealing King Trident’s magical trident. But sadly, Ursula is the one who is banished, goes mad, and later dies. Did all of these bad things happen to Ursula because she was ugly? No, all of these things happened to Ursula because she snapped. Ariel had the love of friends and family to support her. But Ursula, she had no one, even her two eels died in the end. She was a plain woman who sought power and was punished because of it. Then, by banishing Ursula, and denying her love, they slowly destroyed her. Sound familiar? Well because we’ve heard this story before. It was used to tell the ending of the Deanery’s Targaryen’s character arc where she devolved into the mad queen. Jon Snow left her, her best friend was murdered, leaving Danny bereaved. Yet, she was the most powerful woman in the world of Westeros, just like Ursula was the most powerful witch in the Atlantica Sea.
Why some witches have a bad attitude
Society will try and tame a powerful woman by isolating her, naming her witch, calling her wicked, turning her friends and family against her, until she eventually breaks. Overtime, she becomes the monster that society imagined. Is this the fate for all powerful women? No, this only happens to women who close themselves off from love. This is why it’s so important to always be on the vibration of love. That loving vibration will not only save you from imploding. It will also help you manifest your desires and your dreams.
Society has broken down good witches by calling them evil, ostracizing them, and turning their friends and family against them. Closed off from love, these witches turn bad, and become the monsters that society imagined.
