Just a Little Surprised
To observe attentively is to remember distinctly. --Edgar Allan Poe, The Murders in the Rue Morgue
Paloma wrote me and it was typewritten but she had these cool images injected onto the sheets of paper. It was very artsy cool. I loved it. She wrote:
Balaruc, l3 20 juin 1995 Dear Michael,
Thanks for your cards. I was just a little surprised when I discovered the one with the parrots that says KATIN which means prostitute in French, but that’s ok (in fact it’s not written the same way).
Lucky you! Seems like a lot of people really love you. That was probably great to have that surprise party. See, that’s Alan’s fault; otherwise, I would have been there. I’m sure he did it on purpose! I am for the peace in couples!
I’m glad you enjoyed the view of Spielberg’s house. Too bad I can’t send you video tapes. Yesterday, I saw this show made by Estelle Halliday where she travels all over the world and shows places in a town. This time she was in Miami and we saw Madonna’s house, Stallone’s and Gianni Versace’s. I, of course, know who he is. I like Versace clothes a lot. In fact, I will be one of his future customers as soon I will be rich. And I saw another house that belongs to a basketball player and that is on sale for 10 million dollars. I’m thinking about buying it!
Why are you moving back to Marina Del Rey? Isn’t Pacific Palisades by the beach?
They are not playing CASPER over here yet. Who plays in it? What is it about? They’ve talked a lot about BRAVEHEART. A French actress, Sophie Marceau, plays in it. I already told you about her. She is the one who played in the movie PACIFIC PALISADES. I’ve also heart about the movie with Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood. I have read in one of those trash magazines that they had some kind of crush. I also like Clint Eastwood a lot—even if he is way older than I am. I fell in love in a movie with Shirley MacLaine (she was a sister) that was an old western. I have not heard yet about FRENCH KISS. It’s funny to see France in American movies. That reminds me of FRANTIC, Roman Polanski’s movies with Harrison Ford and Roman’s wife. I liked it.
I loved the music from the movie PULP FICTION. I want to buy it. Did I tell you that I’ve seen it? You are right. It was really violent. I liked it except that scene with Bruce Willis that really makes you feel something, you don’t see that much blood. The idea is really disgusting and it’s really worse to see liters of blood. In fact, don’t you think that without that part of the movie it would have been good? It was different. I liked the scenes with John Travolta.
I would like to see INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE and FRENCHKISS now. Maybe SIRENS, too, since you say it’s great. I wasn't that attracted by this one.
Talking about KEY WEST, isn’t it where Kelly McGillis has her restaurant. THE KELLY’S? If it is not there that’s somewhere around there. I saw it yesterday in that same show I was telling you about. You are right that it looks like the kind of place with weather you and I would like. I also liked the views of Miami. I love the Art Deco style (Of course, inspired by France!)
Nothing else to tell you today except that I'm very tired because I took Alexandre to the train station this morning at 7AM. He will be in Paris in about an hour at 111:55AM. The TGV is really fast. He is gone to get our new car.
How do you like this homemade paper? I have to go now. Write me.
I was, of course, kidding about Alan (in case he reads your mail). Say hello for me.
Love,
Paloma
I guess Paloma forgot about our structural damage from our Marina Del Rey house from the earthquake. The Pacific Palisades house is only leased temporarily thanks to our Homeowner’s Insurance. The party in Pacific Palisades is almost over—but at least we can say we lived here (for a while).
And to cap off the end of the week I was sad to have to take mom and my nieces to LAX as they’re heading back to Alameda. On my way back I had a postcard from Barbara Reynolds in Berkeley:
June 95, Almost 3AM
You’ve heard about our heat wave no doubt. I like the experience. Feels so meditative.
Alice and I had breakfast at BRICK HUT on Saturday before seeing the movie WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING.
So, when do you plan on being here this July?
We saw the movie PRIEST last week. So good...did you see?
I’ve got to tell you...every SOLSTICE when the sun is highest in the heavens it is possible to stand an egg on end without support. Isn’t that exciting? Something to add spark to our eyes.
Love, Barbara
