What I'm Reading

Another book by the "other" Elizabeth Taylor (the first one I read was Angel which you will find if you scroll to November of last year.) Recently to my great joy, I've been reading more and more books about the experiences of being old (The Thursday Murder Club is one such example and that was sweet and forgettable.) After reading this, written in the 70s, I actually got really angry that this author is "the other Elizabeth Taylor" when really we should be calling the actor that. Mrs Palfrey At The Claremont is the story of Mrs Palfrey, a woman who looks like a distinguished man, a general in drag, and her moving into the Claremont Hotel, which has a residential package for the elderly. Without condescending or being too mean, Taylor gently skewers all of humanity but so lovingly that you're shaking your head going "ah yes." Lots of moments that make you smile to yourself, and equally lots of moments that are so sad. I finished it last night and all I wanted to do was think about it and talk about it so please read it and let's DISCUSS. #bookstagram #mrmbookclub #121in2021 #elizabethtaylor #mrspalfreyattheclaremont
