Something Old, Something New…

…something borrowed, something technically difficult but exhilaratingly challenging. That's how that saying goes, isn't it?

I'm working on a new story. It's new in that this will be the first time I sit down to write the entire narrative, though it is not new to me. The premise, the characters, certain lines and a few pivotal scenes have been in my head for a year and a half. Possibly more. That's sort of how it goes. For each shiny new idea that hits me, maybe one of five makes it to the outlining stage. And maybe one of five of those actually keeps my attention long enough that I have to write it. I've wanted to tell this story for some time. It's evolved a bit since I first outlined it and filed it away. Stories do that, when you turn you back on them. They grow and expand, and pick up a miraculous number of twists on their own.

An exceptional occurrence within this world's system of magic will make it technically difficult to tell. However, I hope that same exception will make it touching and a bit sad and, most importantly (to me anyway), funny. God, there's one scene that makes me laugh every time I think of it. I finally wrote it down about a year ago, and keep coming back to it. I just hope it still fits now that I'm telling the whole story. I'll post snippets and lines once I've achieved the voice.

And, lest anyone think this means that Sydney and Malcolm and the Messenger stories have ended, they have not. In fact I should have news on that front fairly soon. Stay tuned…
