The beginning of the end

The first readers have read Dark Soul 4, and they seem to like it. Considering how anxious I was about it, that's a huge sigh of relief. Dark Soul 4 was written in blood sweat and tears post-November, coming out of a serious rage-induced writing block, and according to some private emails I got, nobody can tell the difference. The bullying assholes haven't damaged my story, thank gods.

And, aware that Dark Soul 4 is the turning point (with a dash of dark moment) in the "big arch", as I call it, we'll publish Dark Soul 5 a week early; it's scheduled three weeks from now. I see a lot of anguish over the waiting, and while I think that it heightens the experience in the case of Dark Soul (episodes need to stay apart), it would be cruel to linger for too long.

There are possibilities for spin-offs and related stories - I'm pretty sure I'll write some sex between Gianbattista and Silvio (set earlier, exploring how Silvio became Battista's "heir"), and I start getting threatening emails about a Franco book. That one should be pretty easy - kind of. Franco's story is a good ten years old, and I know how it goes, and his lover is still very present in my head (good thing - some characters simply don't last that long), so it's just under the surface. I'll have to build a totally new world, though because I can't deal with the research of the one where it's actually set in (I don't speak French and I can't just visit the location). It can be done, but it's something I'll do after my historicals.

What Dark Soul has definitely done was to create a desperate need for me to write more gay mafia stories (hell, I'd READ them, but they don't seem to exist!). And the fact that I'm feeding that urge with watching The Godfather I and II (and, wow, was Robert de Niro hot as Vito Corleone!), and there's Godfather III and Goodfellas on the list next. Mafia stories have a lot of things I like - power play, guns (well, danger, I like danger), social pressure, and so much happens between the lines. A nod, a silence, can mean so much in that world, and it's daunting to show those layers in a way that readers "get it". Some might not, but that's OK. So, yeah, there's the possibility for more. I'm especially tempted by the potential between a boss and a consigliere, but I'd have to build a whole familiglia, and for that I need more research. Taking this stuff from - highly inaccurate - movies won't work. So, there's another pile of research, and right now, that's a touch more than I have time for.

Speaking of historicals - I'm going to free Solange from Special Forces and put her into my WWII novel. I's just a supporting role, but I love that woman and think she'd make a fine addition. In my head, I'm sometimes a director and I like casting and re-casting my favourites. There are only very thin walls between stories in my head. Some are closer than others. Silvio is a character who effortlessly skips across genres and story lines, and he'll get a lot more play, but right now, I'm attempting to fall into that place in 1942, and I'm taking Solange with me.

In any case, I'll try to do some writing on the space opera and then do some plotting/outlining work on my historical novel today. After we've been out to hunt some breakfast, that is.

Aiko Reading that you have all these stories planned and that you're playing around with good ol' characters as well as new ones makes me grin like I've just won the lottery. This post made me so happy :) good to see that the muse is back in full force.

And of course, now that you have a plan for Franco, we can put those kidnap and "persuade" plans on ice :p

Yay for Solange! Yay, more Franco! And for the salutary effect of threatening emails. :>

message 3: by Emma (new)

Emma I am thrilled beyond words that the final volume is coming out early. As a diehard fan The Godfather and your writing I would love to bask and soak up anything you conjure along or relevant to the mafia domain.

Yes, take Solagne with you :) knowing your crushing exponent it’s going to be intensely exquisite.

message 4: by Jenn (new)

Jenn Very excited for more writing from you in any capacity! I love the amount of research you do and it really shows. I'm glad you came back to writing and bullies didn't bring you down. I haven't finished 4 yet, but I also find it seamless. Good luck to your future endeavors. :-)

message 5: by Johanna (new)

Johanna I'm so glad to read about your plans concerning stories to come - especially the mafia ones! ;) You sound so positive. And I must say that one thing that came through clearly in Dark Soul Vol. 4 was, no doubt, your joy of writing. So... "what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger" and all that... *grin*

message 6: by Yoshi (new)

Yoshi Can't get enough mafia story, please throw in a couple of assassins and I will be a happy girl! *dancing & drinking*

message 7: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov Aiko - Franco even gets a happy ending. Here's a tough bastard who really earns his break.

Kate - It was the "offers I can't refuse" (but then, they came from people who follow my blog and know I've just watched The Godfather 1-3). I mean, I really don't want to wake up with a decapitated horse in my bed.

Virginia - There'll definitely be more Silvio. And there's a huge amount of character background and what happened "back in the Eighties" between Paolo Spadaro and Gianbattista Falchi.

Emma - I'll have to build my own famiglia to do more mafia stuff. I've wrung from these supporting characters what they had to give. But I'm most definitely game for more mafia stuff. Maybe I'll jump back in time a bit. *eyes history books* Solange is just perfect for that WWII novel, too. It's a natural fit.

message 8: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov Jenn - Yep, the research is huge (also really interesting); and I still find mistakes every now and then, which drives me mad. :) I'll probably plunder the "true crime" section at my favourite bookstores and see what I can do with more stories in that world. Writing's the one thing I was put on this planet to do, so I better do it. In a way, I feel like I owe it. It's definitely a compulsion.

Sandra - thank you for your kinds words and support. I'm not sure I could stop the Muse if I tried. He's a hardy bastard who goes off into a dozen directions at the same time. The other "mostly contemporary" I did was Counterpunch, but I'm also really proud of Break and Enter (cyberpunk) and Scorpion (gritty military fantasy). I just can't be nailed down in any genre.

Yoshi - LOL, you're a serious hitman fan, I know. :) Can you recommend me any gay mafia stuff of quality? I really want to READ some of that...

message 9: by Aiko (new)

Aiko Owh shucks, now you're just trying to make me squeal like a preteen at a Bieber concert. Mission accomplished by the way ^^

message 10: by Christina (new)

Christina Yes more Mafia! Bravo to you Aleks for being able to pull yourself up and through the weeds and continue to do what you love.

message 11: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov Aiko - It's OK, I won't tell anybody. :)

Christina - It's just so fascinating. The loyalty, the treason, the high stakes - honor, death... it's a fantastic setting.

message 12: by Yoshi (new)

Yoshi *sigh*
Unfortunately, I don't know any good gay mafia story, yours is the best so far.... If you know any others, please let me know!

message 13: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov Damn. I have an extremely particular itch I want to scratch now, and looks like I can't. Argh.

message 14: by Indie Reviews (last edited Feb 26, 2012 02:51PM) (new)

Indie Reviews I am a huge Coppola and Scorsese fan. HUGE. Always have been, always will be. I've watched the Godfather trilogy too many times to count and Godfather II along with Goodfellas remain two of my favourite movies of all time.

I have yet to read your Dark Soul series. I wasn't able to get to the stories released in 2011. Although I've purchased all to date (DS 4 arrived this past week) and have pre-ordered DS 5, I'm going to wait for #5 to arrive and look forward to reading them consecutively. While I've desperately tried to avoid spoilers via reviews, etc., the buzz surrounding the series is hard to miss so I look forward to clearing the review deck I've committed to and sitting down with only this series in hand - soon I hope.

I'm happy that your writing block from the past November ugliness did not last. From the sound of it inspiration and muse appear to be in tact. :)

message 15: by Christina (new)

Christina *sigh* I know. Now I want to go and watch The Godfather(s), LOL. It's been a while since I saw them.

message 16: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov Hi Indi, great hearing from you. :) I've just watched the movies (I try to stay away from any fiction about stuff I'm currently working on), and I did enjoy those movies a great deal. Goodfellas is on the list for tomorrow, and then the Sopranos. I'm not quite done with that theme/subject yet. :)

Let me know what you think when you get around to it. :)

And, yep, the Muse is quite happy and productive at the moment. Sometimes it's enough to get rid of (and block, and ban) negative people.

message 17: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov Christina - I'd recommend it. You can drool with me over Tom Hagen.

message 18: by Lenore (new)

Lenore Erm. We have this obsession about mafia films and books in our home but, unfortunately, I don't know any gay ones, either.

I love The Sopranos, it's one of the best TV shows ever IMO. Casino (the movie) is kinda meh, Mean Streets is a lot better.

Gomorrah by Roberto Saviano is a favourite book (the movie is pretty damn good, as well.)

I can go through the hubby's collection if you're interested. Still no gay mobsters, I'm afraid. You're breaking new ground, I suppose.

message 19: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov Lenore - yes, we either own those, or I just put them in my queue. Gomorrah is on the list, too, to read. Poor bastard is still getting hunted for that, so it has to be interesting. :) I'll see what I can dig up, but if you find anything worthwhile, don't hesitate to let me know.

message 20: by Lenore (new)

Lenore Sure thing. I'll see what I can dig up for you as well :)

message 21: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov Yay, thanks!

Organized crime/mafia, has always been a fascinating topic for me, in particular in film - I'm a mafia movie buff. I actually haven't done any reading of it. So your DS series will be my first exploration of the topic in lit.

Goodfellas is based on a true story, quite violent (in comparison to the Godfather movies) and with an amazing soundtrack. Personally, I think it's one of Scorsese's best films. Also, his Casino is good with an equally great soundtrack, you may wish to try that one as well.

And Sopranos is excellent. I have somewhat of a warped sense when it comes to this series, it was actually a mixture of comical and irony for me. Comical (as in laugh out loud) because the characters are often such caricatures but also ironic at the same time because people like this actually do exist in real life. I'd be interested in your take on the series.

"Let me know what you think when you get around to it. :)"

Oh definitely. I hope to review the series as a whole.

And, yep, the Muse is quite happy and productive at the moment. Sometimes it's enough to get rid of (and block, and ban) negative people.

Yep, fully agree. Life is way too short and always better in quality and health when you invite the positive forces in it and banish the negative. Glad to see you're doing well. :)

message 23: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov Oh, Scarface! Of course, that's a great one I wouldn't mind seeing again.

message 24: by cordi (new)

cordi I feel a but guilty for it, but Solange stole the spotlight away. And I might as well tell you, I've actually written a fanfic about her and Ash while Jean was off with Dan. I love that woman^^ In my head, she knows all of Jean's tricks. I look forward to what you do with her!

And I'm still working on a reread of DS1-3, but I'll be getting to the fourth soon. It's thrilling to know that you'll be publishing DS5 earlier. Those cliffhangers are always such a tease.

message 25: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov That's brilliant - no need to feel guilty! What happened between her and Ash? (I never really decided that, but I agree, she knows Jean very well and is too smart to be fooled)

Yep, three weeks is the maximum I want to inflict. While I personally love the anticipation, I also hate it.

message 26: by Darkm (last edited Feb 28, 2012 02:46AM) (new)

Darkm I love this blog post. I really do.

I can't wait to read more about Silvio and Gianbattista, I am happy to hear there will be Franco's story, because he is a character I can connect to, just like Silvio, and read more about them is always a plus in my book.

Now, the fact that you want to bring back Solange is wonderful, I loved that woman and I want to read more about her. :)

I think I already mentioned how much I didn't use to like Mafia's stories (I think it's connected to the fact I live here)? Well, apparently if you write them I like them just fine and I can't wait to read more. It's definitely your fault. :)

Now I'll go back to patiently wait for DS-5. I'm glad no one took your stories and your inspiration away, because we all would have missed something good. :)

message 27: by Nithu (new)

Nithu I've just finished Vol 4 and loved it, so I'm relieved that Vol 5 won't be long :) I'd love to read more about Franco, not that I want to push you or anything. Oops, my nose is growing!

message 28: by VJ (new)

VJ Summers Boondock Saints is awesome - I haven't seen the sequel yet, but the original? OMG!

I could totally squee and "what s/he said" pretty much every comment here... I am SO HAPPY with this post - I can't even tell you!

message 29: by Darkm (new)

Darkm "Oh shit... I'm totally feeding the wrong plot bunnies now.

Watch U-boat porn, now! "

Rofl!

message 30: by Johanna (new)

Johanna I agree with Volya about Tarantino-marathon: Pulp Fiction, Resrvoir Dogs, Jackie Brown... you gotta love them! ;) And don't forget The Untouchables... and Donnie Brasco with Al Pacino and Johnny Depp! And maybe The Usual Suspects with Kevin Spacey! Wait... those weren't actually mafia movies, am I right?! Anyhoo, just keep focusing on this mafia thing (and forget the U-boat porn...). *grin*

message 31: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov LOL - my Lovefilm queue gets longer and longer... (Lovefilm is the local Netflix). Finished "Goodfellas" yesterday. "Casino" is next.

message 32: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov VJ - Loved Boondock Saints. Of of my favourite B-C movies. But I also really enjoyed the various Punisher movies.

message 33: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov I don't loop, I binge.

message 34: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov I already watched Inglorious Basterds.

message 35: by Johanna (new)

Johanna Yep yep, we are your "Tarantino-cheerleaders" - Volya and I. How do you like your pom-pons, Volya? *grin*

message 36: by Johanna (new)

Johanna Aleksandr wrote: "I already watched Inglorious Basterds."

Hey, but now you are taking a sidetrack from the mafia thing towards the war stuff...

message 37: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov I watched it months ago, though... :)

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ Oooh, Tarantino... I haven't re-watched Reservoir Dogs in too long.

Is there anyone here who liked Dog Day Afternoon? In my opinion it was the best Pacino ever. I like robbery-gone-wrong movies.

message 39: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov Don't know it ... yet.

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ Val wrote: "Is there anyone here who liked Dog Day Afternoon?

I liked it. Young Pacino was pretty hot!"

I watched it a long time after seeing Godfather and I found myself jumping on the couch: Pacino and Cazale? Michael and Fredo? By the way, (view spoiler)

message 41: by cordi (new)

cordi Aleksandr wrote: "That's brilliant - no need to feel guilty! What happened between her and Ash? (I never really decided that, but I agree, she knows Jean very well and is too smart to be fooled)

Ah, well I'm convinced something happened between them already since Jean was so concerned that Vadim watch Ash before he and Dan left. Also, with Jean's state of mind, he might've not collared Solange. (And I also get miffed with Jean for fooling around...) So I wrote Solange having her own bit of fun with Ash.

message 42: by Aleksandr (new)

Aleksandr Voinov I almost forgot about Ash, actually. Might have to re-read those bits (I haven't re-read any of that since 2008/9).
