I can't give advice to any other writer (we're all so different), but here's some of what I think works for me: (1) When stuck, usually out of fear of not being good enough, I just write — anything — without self-censorship. About being stuck, why this piece is a challenge or whatever the problem seems to be; in all that new verbiage, I can usually find something I can use, and throw out all the rest. (2) I view all writing, even this note or email messages, as practice, and anything published on my blog or Goodreads or anywhere as exercise. (3) I have (finally) abandoned the intimidating notion that I ought to write "as well as" any of the authors I admire. I must accept that I am not, and cannot expect to write like, anyone else, but maybe I can write a little more clearly and forcefully each time out. I don't now if any of that is sage, but it keeps my imagination working,

They're not prescriptive, they're an outlook. I'm pretty much the same--if stuck, I may write about being stuck, or go work on something else for awhile. For me, it helps to have multiple writing projects, but I also do a lot of miscellaneous writing like we're doing here.
