Drawing & Sketching: A Former Pastime

Me Drawing Pocahontas In College (Dec. 2013)

If I had any sort of skill that could be described as a talent, it would be drawing. I’ve been doing it since I was a child, but a part of me has always doubted my abilities because of how limited I am when it comes to the activity.

As demonstrated in the above photo, I can only draw illustrations that I can see in front of me rather than from my own imagination. I believe this is referred to as eyeballing – when you produce a copy of an existing image without tracing it. For years, I would print out my favorite images, and then draw them on another piece of paper.

I briefly revealed in my previous blog post that I don’t draw as often as I used to. In fact, I haven’t drawn much of anything since college. So why did I stop drawing?

Lack of Passion

After I completed my education by graduating college, I realized that there was no motive for me to continue drawing. I never had a passion for it. While there were times I would draw for fun, most of the time, I would draw because I had to for school assignments or because I was bored.

When I was in high school, I would frequently draw in my sketchbook during lunch period or class. Although I sat with friends, I wasn’t very sociable, so sketching gave me something to do to pass the time. Even though I didn’t have much enthusiasm for it, I did enjoy drawing characters from my favorite animated films and television series.

I continued to draw animated characters in my sketchbook when I went to college. I failed to make friends in college, so drawing kept me busy when I wasn’t working on school assignments. Instead of sketching in the cafeteria or class like I did in high school, I would typically do it in my dormitory.

After graduating college, I didn’t see any reason for me to continue drawing. I had found other leisure activities to keep me entertained, and I can honestly say that I don’t miss drawing at all. However, I do wish I had drawn some more characters when I was in high school and college. It’s possible that I will start drawing more in the future, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
