Lessons from my book - 1
In organisations you will experience three levels of relationships.
The first level can be called "utilitarian" - there is an apparent relationship till the person is "useful" to the organisation. Once the use is over, the person is discarded. Here the common belief is that "people are a resource to achieve results".
More mature organisations follow the second level of relationships which I call as "transactional" or "process" based relationships. Here relationships are important to the extent that it is part of a process. For example, teamwork and collaboration are important in these organisations since people need to work together as part of the process chain. Here the common belief is that "We need to work together and hence we need to relate".
The third level of relationships is what I call as "essence". Here relationships are there because we value and respect each other. Here you "matter" not for what you bring in as a resource or the fact that your work needs to link with others, but because you are. At this level, the belief is that "relationships are the organisation and we work together because we relate".
I have articulated this in my story of Citicorp Overseas Software Limited in my book "If you feel, good, you work good- Relationships lead to Results". Please buy, read and write a review on your own experiences of being part of organisations and how it feels to be a person in these three levels of relationships.
