2. Shifting the Balance, by Jan Burkins and Kari Yates ($32 value)

Shifting the Balance* is a great read for teachers who want to bring the science of reading into a balanced literacy classroom. From the publisher: “These days, it seems that everyone has a strong opinion about how to teach young children to read. Some may brush off the current tension as nothing more than one more round of the reading wars. Others may avoid the clash altogether due to the uncivilized discourse that sometimes results. Certainly, sorting the signal from the noise is no easy task. In this leading-edge book, authors Jan Burkins and Kari Yates address this tension as a critical opportunity to look closely at the research, reevaluate current practices, and embrace new possibilities for an even stronger enactment of balanced literacy.”

3. Decodable books from Whole Phonics ($200 value)

If you’ve ever thought that decodable books are boring or dull, youhaveto check out Whole Phonics! The stories are creative and funny, and the pictures are the some of the best we’ve seen. We are thrilled that Whole Phonics is donating 29 books (set 1 and set 2) to the giveaway!

4. Decodable books from Express Readers ($125 value)

The illustrations may not look as professional as other books, but trust us – you and your students will fall in love as soon as you get your hands on these books! The text is nice and big, on the left-facing page. Each book has quite a few pages, and the best part is that theytell good stories that make sense. Express Readers is donating 34 fabulous books to the giveaway.

5. Decodable books from PhonicBooks ($45 value)

These are a favorite of many reading teachers. For the first books, kids only need to know a handful of letter sounds. The books have a unique illustration style (photographed backgrounds with cartoons drawn on top). The early books are very, very short making them a great choice for brand new readers. Thank you to PhonicBooks for donating 14 decodable booksto the giveaway!

6. Classroom set of magnetic letters

We love Lakeshore’s* giant letter kit! The giveaway winner will receive this set of 240 lowercase magnetic letters in a compartmentalized storage box.

7. HD Word Student Kit

The winner will also receive Really Great Reading’s* beautiful manipulative kit for multisensory phonics instruction. What an amazing tool for building phonemic awareness and phonics knowledge!

*The authors/creators of Shifting the Balance, Lakeshore Learning and Really Great Reading are not connected with the giveaway.
