Close…No Need to Shout

I’ve heard from various people through my life, “I wish God would just shout out loud so I can hear Him.”
We pray for guidance, “God show me a sign.”
We pray for discernment, “God point me where You want me to go.”
We pray for hard decisions, “God just tell me the right answer.”
We pray for Him to speak. We beg for Him to scream. We yearn for Him to yell!
Tonight as I was walking I flipped on an album I haven’t listened to much. One song stuck out from Tauren Wells, Close.
I know God is close. I know He is near. I know He is always there.
But we still want Him to be noticeable. We want Him to show off and prove to us He is God. We want Him to point blank scream so we can hear Him.
Tauren sings,
I hear You whisper ’cause You’re
Close, close, close
Tauren Wells
That simple line caught me off guard.
So often we want God to be loud. We want Him to shout. We want Him to rattle us to our core with a loud, thunderous voice.
But would you want someone to scream in your ear? Would you want someone to shout directions in your face? Would you want your loved one to yell at you until your insides melt?
If someone screamed in my ear I would probably tell them to shut up and get out of my face.
Wouldn’t you rather have someone talk soothingly to you up close?
Since God is close to us, why would we ask Him to shout? When He could just whisper words of encouragement.
When He can gently nudge us in the right direction.
Since God is near, maybe we should stop asking Him to shout and listen for that whisper.
May we open our ears a little more. May we open our hearts to His will. May we open our eyes to see how He sees.
And may we listen for that gentle hum.
Peace
