This week on Donald Glenn’s Songs for Sunday, I’m featuring singer-songwriter Jakob Dylan, who was never really on my radar, other than the Wallflower hit-single One Headlight. Then, I happened to catch a Netflix documentary that he starred in a few years ago. It was called Echo in the Canyon and it offered a nostalgic look back at L.A.’s Laurel Canyon, where many of the iconic groups of the 60s like The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, and The Mamas and the Papas lived, often getting together to share music around their canyon-mansion coffee tables. Although, Dylan wasn’t even born when the Laurel Canyon sound hit its peak, he seems to have a real feel for the music and an easy rapport with the musicians of that era. This is perhaps because of his famous dad, Bob.
I was impressed with the simplicity he brought to his versions of the Laurel Canyon songs and I went looking for his solo offerings. I found the same easy-listening style, reminiscent of artists like Lyle Lovett and Jackson Brown, but with a quality that’s all his own. Enjoy the list!
