Lamb Selection Day

The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!

John 12:12-15

Palm Sunday…the triumphant entry…the great welcoming. We celebrate this day as the day Jesus was praised and welcomed with opened arms into Jerusalem. The Son of God was greeted with praise.

Another name we give Jesus is the Lamb of God. Do you understand why He is given that name?

It’s not because it was cute and soft like a little lamb. No, that would be to easy.

In Jewish custom during Passover a lamb is sacrificed for the atonement of sins. Families pick out a lamb to sacrifice. Do you know when the shepherds brought in the lambs to be picked?

You got it. The same day Jesus was entering into Jerusalem.

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, “This month shall be for you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their fathers’ houses, a lamb for a household.

Exodus 12:1-3

As the crowd was cheering Hosannah, lambs were baaing as they entered the city of Jerusalem as well.

Jesus was the perfect Lamb of God. He was the blameless sacrificial lamb. He became the blood on the doorpost of the wooden cross. He laid his life down so those who believe would be spared from the Angel of Death as judgement passes over.

I urge you this week to read the Jewish custom of Passover and see the symbolism. Open your hearts and your eyes to see how Christ fits into this perfectly.

May you have a blessed Holy Week.

Peace
