“Are you hiding from me, Kelsey?” He is now standing two steps away from me, staring down at me.
“You wish.”
He roots himself down next to me, his leg brushing mine. “We need to finish our conversation, don’t we?”
“You were pretty clear.” I jump to my feet and climb up the stairs.
“Damn it, Kelsey,” he hisses behind me.
As I reach the landing, he clutches my arm and spins me around. “You left before I could explain.”
“There’s nothing to explain,” I say as I snatch my arm from his grip.
“And yet, you’re mad at me.”
“I’m mad at you for a lot of reasons.”
He pushes me against the railing and grips it with both hands on each side of me. “So let’s get this one reason out of the way, shall we? You twisted my words, and you know it. I never said you aren’t meant for anybody. That is bullshit.”
“So what did you mean?” I say, panting and struggling not to inhale his scent.
“Derek’s only interested in sex.”
“What makes you think that isn’t what I’m interested in, too?”
He steps back and rubs the nape of his neck; then he watches me, keeping a safe distance between us. “I remember, Kelsey. I remember every second of our interaction the day we first met.”
