Book Review: Waitlisted by Laurel Gans

Kacey Barlow had no idea it would be this hard to get into grad school. Her well-to-do family has been attending UI for generations, and admissions had been recruiting her since high school! She was a shoo-in—that is, until they gave her the boot.

She can't tell her parents, and can't stand the thought of her friends going off to grad school without her. Her grades are slipping. Her professors can't remember her name, and her tutor, Taylor, won't stop hitting on her when they're supposed to be studying.

Okay, maybe that last one isn't so bad. But it's not going to help get her a seat in another school...and applications are due in two weeks...

I was a little on the fence about the book. I enjoyed all the dental talk and could understand Kacey was worried about letting down her family. Gans has a fun and fast way of writing that kept me pulled into the story, even when I wasn't a huge fan of the main character. That I think speaks highly of the author. Waitlisted was full of fast and frenetic scenes that kept me flipping the pages in a hurry, eager to figure out how Kacey was going to handle her little problem. She had a few good ideas, and a few harebrained ones as well. My problem with Kacey was that she seemed very lazy and sometimes I wondered if she was compulsive liar. I actually identified with her roommate, Natalie, much more. I loved Natalie and cute her little family, and it was easy for me to cheer for her. I sometimes felt she got the short end of the stick, especially compared to Kacey, but in a roundabout way she gets that lucky break at the end of the story. Even though I didn't always see eye to eye with Kacey, I wanted to read her story. I wanted her to get into grad school. I was rooting for her – seriously. And I have to say that all rests with the author. I really salute Gans and Waitlisted, and will happily read more of her books.  I hope one comes out about Natalie – I really loved her character and would love to read more about her!
