Windswift the Wanderer - Fantasy Romance - snippet for #WeWriWa and #SnippetSunday

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday . Reading is a safe pastime during the pandemic. Sample the work of a new author. Read snippets of stories in different genres.
I’m posting snippets from my new fantasy, which was published this month. After escaping from murderous invaders, Bridget Bramble is traveling to the fabled land of Oakenwald where elves and men live in harmony. She reaches an obstacle, a landslide of huge boulders, and meets an elf. Note, Bridget doesn’t tell him that her buttons include magic charms.

The last lines were: He swung his hand in a dismissive gesture. “Few lands are safe in these days. Fewer places offer safety for a maid in a boy’s britches.”
His gray gaze speared dread into her heart. How had he penetrated her disguise so quickly? Did he also pose a threat? She shivered, afraid to speak, and scarcely dared to look at his emotionless face.
Finally, he flattened his hand on his chest and bowed, saying, “I am called Windswift the Wanderer. Will you grant me the honor of learning your name?”
“Sir, I’m Bridget Bramble. Once I was the chief button maker of the village of Woollensted. But now, I’ve lost the path into the mountains.”
Nine lines and here’s a little more:
Giving a tiny nod of acknowledgement, he said, “My journey also lies over the mountains and into Oakenwald. If you wish, I will serve as your guide.” A hint of laughter lightened his voice, “I promise not to harm you, Bridget Bramble, maker of buttons.”
Scarcely able to believe her luck, she bestowed a beaming smile on him. “Thank you, Windswift. I’ll accept your kind offer.”
Thus, they agreed to travel together across the mountains. In Bridget’s opinion, they made an unlikely couple, a tall fair elf and a young woman disguised as a boy.

Fantasy romance. A young witch escapes the destruction of her home and embarks on a perilous quest for the fabled land where elves and humans live in peace.
In a land threatened by cruel invaders from the east, Bridget Bramble lives in a small village where she barters herbs and carved buttons. When marauders target her village and murder her family, she flees into the woods. Armed with her Granny’s advice and a bag of magic buttons, she sets out on the perilous journey to Oakenwald, the fabled land where elves and men live in harmony. As she travels farther from home, she encounters malicious creatures from the worst kind of folktale.
Lost in the foothills of the mountains, Bridget meets the elf, Windswift the Wanderer. He offers to guide her across the mountain range. But what is the elf doing in human lands? Can an ordinary, or almost ordinary, human girl trust a cold hearted elf to lead her to safety?
Epic fantasy adventure and romance with darker overtones. This story weaves elements of folklore and a quest for a safe haven in a land where magic is real.
