Better to Have Loved?

From a distance, a fleeting glimpse,Then eye contact and some flirting attemptsBrief conversations, casual talksCoincidental meetings, leisurely walksPlayfully joking, a touch here and therePersonal stories and secrets to shareA friendship is formed that will last foreverA kinship, a bond that cannot be severedThrough this connection grew something moreA companion to be admired, loved and adoredThis deeper love remained concealedFor attacks would come if revealedSociety shuns the different formsOf love that simply do not conformPhysically separated, broken apartThe two still remain one at heartBut the pressure from others—even family and friends—Causes a break, and so it endsThis love so pure that felt so rightHas lost its strength and given up the fightThe only evidence of your love, it seems,Are your thoughts and memories, no more than dreamsIt was said, “Tis better to have loved and lost”But would you do it again if you knew the cost? Was it worth the pain from letting inThis taste of love, of what could’ve been?Is it better to stop, conceal or hideA form of true love?  Only you can decide.
