Horrid memories - snippet from Bridget Bramble for #WWriWa and #SnippetSunday

Happy Valentine's Day!

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday . Reading is a safe pastime during the pandemic. Sample the work of a new author. Read snippets of stories in different genres.

I’m posting snippets from my new fantasy romance, which was published this month. Bridget Bramble has fled from murderous invaders and is traveling to the fabled land of Oakenwald where elves and men live in harmony. She hits an obstacle on the trail, a landslide of huge boulders, and discovers an elf watching her. He speaks gently to her and she explains about the raiders killing her family.

The final lines were: A hint of sympathy entered his voice, “Sad losses in truth. Sad days of warfare among the tribes of men. Elves prefer our peaceful havens.”

Horrid memories flooded into her mind. She squeezed her eyelids shut to stop the flow of tears. But she couldn’t risk ignoring the elf. He was the first sympathetic person she had met in her hasty flight from the pillaged village. She wiped away the tears, nodded and murmured, “I’ve been traveling alone for six days.”

“Are you seeking the passage through the peaks?”

“Yes,” she replied in growing confidence. “I’m seeking the land of Oakenwald, which lies beyond the mountain range. My great grandparents traveled from Oakenwald to Barringsland. They settled in the village where I was born.”

10 lines and a few more:

His musical voice became grave, “The journey over the mountains is difficult and dangerous.”

She cocked her head, asking, “What are the dangers?”

“Dangers of falling rocks and violent gales. Dangers from vicious beasts and men.”

She chewed her lip. “I have to cross the mountains. It’s not safe for me to stay in this land.”

He swung his hand in a dismissive gesture. “Few lands are safe in these days. Fewer places offer safety for a maid in a boy’s britches.”

Fantasy romance. A young witch escapes the destruction of her home and embarks on a perilous quest for the fabled land where elves and humans live in peace.

In a land threatened by cruel invaders from the east, Bridget Bramble lives in a small village where she barters herbs and carved buttons. When marauders target her village and murder her family, she flees into the woods. Armed with her Granny’s advice and a bag of magic buttons, she sets out on the perilous journey to Oakenwald, the fabled land where elves and men live in harmony. As she travels farther from home, she encounters malicious creatures from the worst kind of folktale.

Lost in the foothills of the mountains, Bridget meets the elf, Windswift the Wanderer. He offers to guide her across the mountain range. But what is the elf doing in human lands? Can an ordinary, or almost ordinary, human girl trust a cold hearted elf to lead her to safety?

Epic fantasy adventure and romance with darker overtones. This story weaves elements of folklore and a quest for a safe haven in a land where magic is real.
