The most loved fanart in 2020

Collage of the nine most liked pieces of fanart in 2020

If I learned anything from last year, it’s that nothing will stop people from reading and creating astonishing art! Picking favourites is impossible. Fortunately, I can leave it up to you, so here it is: The fanart you loved the most in 2020. My deepest and most sincere thank you to everyone for putting so much passion into your creations. I am truly honored to have readers like you.

Headshot of a girl with a disturbing special effects raven’s beak protruding from her throat, holding the Czech edition of The Rot.

Taking the beak - by Jane Garlic (Czech)
This was your number 1 favourite, and I can’t blame you! It’s disgusting! Ii’s insane! And I love it! Jane “took the beak” as we say in Ymslanda, in this haunting cosplay with special effects makeup. She actually does little cosplays for all her reviews and it’s pretty neat.

Juva’s red leather outfit, hooded, with mask and arm guards

Juva’s red hunter outfit - by Siri Eriksen (Norway)
My Norwegian publisher hired Siri to bring Juva’s red suit from The Iron Wolf to life, and this was the stunning result! The outfit was on display at Norli Universitetsgaten, an amazing bookstore in Oslo, and it is now on it’s way to Norli Lillehammer! (If you work in a bookstore in Norway, and want to borrow Juvas outfit, drop me a message :))

Colored pencil drawing in a cute, charming style, of Hirka and Lindri in his teahouse.

Lindri’s teahouse - by Sofia (Sweden)
This beautiful colored pencil drawing was the first throwback I ever did for fanart friday, but I had to. The current pandemic made me think of it. It was a much needed reminder to keep calm, and drink your tea, in a very cute and comforting style.

Inked drawing in dramatic red, black and white, of Juva, her sister Solde, with two menacing wolves in the background.

The Sannseyr sisters - By Jenny Jordahl (Norway)
This was the very first featured fanart from «The Iron Wolf,” created by none other than Jenny Jordahl, the multi-talented writer, designer, illustrator and comic artist! She was recently nominated for the Norwegian «Brage Award» for her children’s book: «What really happened to you?» Jenny is famous for fearlessly diving into feminist topics and what us northerners would call heavy sh*t.

Closeup of a forearm with a raven tattoo, lying beside the Polish editions of The Rot and The Might

Raven tattoo - by Natalia (Poland)
Yes, there were a few tattoos as well, like this giant raven forearm! It always makes me emotional to see something so dedicated and permanent as a tattoo. I am humbled and grateful that people would want to keep my stories as lifelong reminders on their skin.

Photo of a cake, designed as a rectangular stone column in grey marble, with a raven skull on top, and a fang necklace on the “ground”.

Raven Rings cake - by Izabela (Poland)
Then there was this impossible to forget edible fanart! An actual award-winning Raven Rings cake! Totally the coolest corvid cake in the history of caking! This mouth-watering creation won bronze medal at Warsaw Expo Sweet. The surface of the rock is fondant, the raven skull is marzipan and fondant, and I can’t even... Certainly fanart in a league of its own.

Photo of a forearm with a big, simplistic tattoo of a herb, in colorful blues and greens.

Vengethorn tattoo - by Sandra Robertsdotter (Sweden)
Definitely the most meta fanart I’ve seen: It’s a tattoo, inspired by a drawing in the cryptic voynich manuscript. (Spoiler alert) Because in The Rot, Hirka saw a printout from that manuscript, and recognized it instantly as Vengethorn (Hemntorn) a herb from Ymslanda. So it's a real tattoo, from a fictional story, referencing a mysterious illustration, from a real document. And now it's permanently healing the arm of Sandra, who happens to be a brilliant comic book artist and illustrator.

Photo portrait of Hirka in her green knitted sweater, combing her red hair with her fingers.

Hirka cosplay - by Dominika Hladik (Czech)
Dominika has created so much gorgeous art, also from The Raven Rings. I don’t think there is any type of artistry she hasn’t tried, and this is her Hirka cosplay. Super cute in her green knitted sweater, red hair and the wolf fang necklace.

Drawing in a dramatic style, showing a readhead with her face being disturbingly transformed into a raven’s beak.

Raven born - by Mervey Kivimäki (Finland)
Gods, you guys are giving me nigthmares with your art sometimes! This one popped up on my mobile, and I actually flinched. Stunning work in a dramatic style, imagining how one might become raven born…
