Tbh I thought this was about flexing on customers when they’re being rude

It can be both. But seriously, let’s not under-portray just how much rudeness public-facing staff are forced to absorb every day they work. Once, at one of my many retail jobs, we had just opened so it was quiet and I was the only person working. I was at the top of a ladder dusting glass shelves and in no way about to get into people’s faces and force them to talk to me, have products shoved at them, etc. A lady walked in and I uttered this utterly offensive word: “Hello!” over my shoulder, as I dusted, since I figured that ignoring her, as the only two humans in a very small store, would be rude. She reared back like a goose about to attack and hissed “I’m just looking!!!!!” with such venom that I was taken aback. And that’s just… customary.
