Brother Matteo II

An example of what I mean is the memory, a rumour I should say, of the well-known death of Laura Spangeli, that has been lately largely reported by the media. A romantic lady, who committed suicide to atone her sins by launching herself from the leaning tower of Pisa. As it is possible to derive from a written memory she left, she decided to commit suicide because Pisa was such a lovely place where Leopardi, Byron and Mary Shelley had spent for a while part of their life. She was so infatuated by this vision that she completely lost herself in this dream of death and romanticism. It is quite evident in fact, that hadn’t she been invaded by this external romantic narrative, she wouldn’t have had a place where to commit suicide and suicide wouldn't have taken place.

But she lived and felt this disastrous compulsion, not like an unescapable doom but instead as a sign of liberation from living the wrong epoch. And we beyond any doubt agree with her, this is not a romantic epoch, indeed.

Since there was no mutual love between them Antonella Panerai apparently without any plausible reason got married to Matteo Sartori, what could have been the liaison between the two it remains inexplicable though.

It could have been the mischievous nature of Matteo that attracted her at the beginning, what ignited a sort of marriage piquancy.

Certainly, Matteo lived in a parasitic way their relation, he continued to be a womanizer and Antonella seemed to be the only woman who made no particular appeal to his sense, but he never ceased to use the money coming from her family, which was a reach family in those days. In the end, their couple life became a disorderly life, where the young wife showed incomparably more dignity and strength than the parasitic husband. Matteo in fact started complaining about his wife and frequently was revealing intimate details too disgraceful for a husband to mention in regard to their own married life.

The result of all that was that she finally left the house and run away from Matteo with a black guy from Nigeria. Poor but canny as much as Matteo. Dalla padella alla brace, it is said in Italian.

Matteo didn’t seem very displeased from the happening. To the point that he introduced a regular harem into their ex villa and abandoned himself to numerous orgies in spite of Covid enforced law measures.

His friend, professional scoffers, said to him “You seem like you had got a promotion, you don’t seem very sorrow of your deep sorrow” and laughed in front of his face.

Human nature is so wicked that even wicked people cannot realize how wicked it can be. It goes beyond their limits of imagination.

After two years Antonella had left the villa she died in a car accident in Lagos where she went living after the elopement with the African bull.

Rumour has it that Matteo was going around Bergamo shouting with joy and raising the hands to Heaven. Other people, instead they report that he wept without restraints like a little child.

We think that both versions are possible because as a general rule even the most wicked people have at least one little grain of humanity in their sealed heart.
