In loving memory of Seamus Wheaton, the best dog.

Yesterday afternoon, Seamus collapsed on our living room floor. We took him to the emergency vet, where they ran some tests, and discovered a large mass on his spleen. He had a 105 fever, and he wasn’t responsive. The doctor told us he was in critical condition.

At almost 12 years-old, Seamus wasn’t a candidate for surgery (and we weren’t going to put him through that, anyway), so at midnight last night, we said goodbye to the best boy in the world.

I know that a lot of you care about our pets, because we post lots of pictures of them and talk about them all the time. You know how much we love them, and you know how much you love your pets, so you know how much this loss hurts all of us.

This overwhelming pain I feel right now is the price we know we’re going to pay for the years we have with our four-legged family memebers. We’ve always known the day would come when he wouldn’t be in our lives, but that didn’t make the arrival of that day any easier.

I’m so grateful we got to be with him in his final moments, and we got to tell him goodbye. We got to thank him for all the joy and love he brought into our lives. We got to kiss him and hug him, and he passed peacefully, with the two people who loved him more than anything by his side.

Seamus was a special dog. At doggy daycare, they used him to evaluate new dogs, because they knew what a good citizen he was. I was always like a proud parent about that. He was a fantastic pack leader for Marlowe. He taught her how to be a dog, and he lives on in her, a little bit.

I’m going to miss him so much. I keep automatically looking for him in all of his places around the house. I know the next few weeks are going to be tough. Eventually, all that will be left is the memory of the joy and love he gave us.

But right now, today, it hurts so much. I miss his grey face so much, and I want to kiss the spot on his big old blockhead one more time.

He was such a wonderful dog, and such a blessing to have in our family. I love him, and I will miss him forever.

Bye bye, Seamus. You were the best boy, and your whole pack loves you. If heaven exists, and dogs go there, I hope you’re playing ball with Riley and Ferris.

Sophie HT I'm so sorry to hear this sad news. My cat Seska (named because she was a volatile pushy female ha ha) died in may 2019 and I'm still not fully over it, I miss her so much, but I know she's keeping my late Nan and Uncle (also cat lovers) company whatever they are and that comforts me greatly!

I belive that the afterlife is like the nexus. Time is not linier there, so from Seamus's point of view, you are already there with him. This also gives me great comfort. I hope it can comfort you too.

Rickster Cerpts Locuson I'm so truly sorry for your loss. No words can take away the pain you feel at a time like this. Just remember that as much love and happiness as Seamus brought, you also brought him by making him part of your family and giving him a life that was full of love, security and happiness. Thank you for sharing Seamus' photo and story with us and know that our hearts, condolences and sympathy are with you in this rough time.

BK Schmalz So sorry. We lost our husky to cancer in her spleen a couple of months ago. The happy memories will live on.

message 9: by Maureen (new)

Maureen So sorry for your loss!! Such a sweet face. Seven years ago yesterday our last dog, Allie passed away from a broken heart. Her bestie, Sadie had died 10 days before. It's so hard to say goodbye to our gentle souls. Hang on to the good memories!

message 10: by Kenci (new)

Kenci I'm so so sorry for your loss of sweet Seamus. My heart hurts for you and your family.

message 11: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Phillips Dogs and cats are a huge part of my life and always have been. I know that loss and pain you are feeling so well. While we love them all, there are some that just stand a little taller in our memories. Seamus left you suddenly. I had a year with my Greyhound following his liver cancer diagnosis. I don't know which situation would be more difficult. But I know you will treasure every day you had with your boy, just as I have with mine. Blessings and love to your family as you make your way through this difficult time. May your hearts be comforted. As Will Rogers said: If dogs don't go to Heaven, I want to go where the dogs are.

message 15: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Lomax I lost my Sly in February. I still look for him to meet me at the door when I get home from work.

message 16: by Arpita (new)

Arpita I have had my dog for only a year (she was already 6 when we got her) and already the thought of the future twists my heart. Sending you love and patience. Seamus is in doggy heaven, most likely as an angel administrator showing other sweet dogs the ropes. Rest well Seamus!

Autumn Eden-Goodman I’m so sorry, Wil. I read this while staring at our senior pup knowing we will have to go through this ourselves soon. I read this with tears and love for you and Anne. Big hugs to both of you and to Marlowe, too.

message 19: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Macklem I'm so very sorry for your loss. I've had one dog in my life - after wanting one my entire life. He's been gone 7 years and I'm only just now toying with the idea that I might try to find another. There is nothing like the completely unrestrained love of a dog.

message 24: by David (new)

David L So sad to lose Seamus, especially at this time of year! It is a sad fact that we will lose many of our furry friends.

message 25: by Fred (new)

Fred Wagner I feel for you, Wil. And as an empath I can feel so even deeper. I can only have and manage a single cat at a time here in this apartment complex. I have taken now to adopting senior cats (over 10). They too often sit in shelters and such indefinitely. They often have special needs (and I am a permanently disabled man with plenty of time and compassion; plus am virtually agoraphobic so my kitties are rarely alone). And often times they have been in abusive and/or neglectful households and require special understanding and acceptance and love. An extremely rough thing when adopting senior kitties is that they will inevitably die a lot sooner (typically) than were I to adopt younger cats or especially kittens. So the heartache is always "right around the corner". The thought is bringing tears now already. The pain is more than words can express. My comfort comes in knowing the end (even last several years) of their lives were filled with real love and understanding. And not a permanent residence in a shelter (or being killed cuz seemingly unwanted and not at a TRUE no-kill shelter). Babydoll (the name she had most of her life prior to me) is 15-1/2 nearly now (a guesstimate they made when I got her). She will have been here 5 years on January 6th. I would say they got the age pretty well correct considering how she is aging now, like notably her hips and reluctance to jump up to places which are low (and can't manage to weed out her skittishness completely so she feels a need to be able "to escape" which means jumping down and stressing her hips). I do now have steps for her for the bed. Suppose I am rambling which is the norm for me when writing. Hope you get to feeling better soon. I am sure Seamus was probably more of a friend than human friends. And better as family than so many families can be. Peace to you my friend. Blessed be.

Susi Matthews I am so very, very sorry. That's a pain from which no one ever really recovers; I still miss my sweet Perry dog who left me 25 years ago. Each fur-baby has their own sacred space within the heart that no one else can fill. Thank you for sharing him with us. Blessed be.
