Character Spotlight: Michael Schmidt, U.S. Army Ranger

“Schmidt stood up and looked across the crowd, into each of their eyes. “We must hold off the nearby garrison. We have engineers with explosives to cut the road,” he said as he motioned to Wilson and Davis. “We have many guns, and a rocket. We don’t need to win, only delay long enough. And then we escape.”

“How have we any hope of accomplishing this?” a man from the crowd asked.

“We’ll plant the explosives. We’ll shoot the tanks with the rockets we have. We’ll fight until they begin to overwhelm us, then an orderly retreat. Anyone within visual range of the enemy should run and look panicked. Then,” he said slamming his left fist into his right palm – “we counterattack as many times as we can. When the Allied forces arrive, we will need to be sure we are clear of the bombing zone. We will work on drawing their men further into the woods so we are at a safe distance. We have asked the Soviets for help in this fight, but we do not know if that call will be answered. Whatever the case, our mission here is to create enough trouble that they focus on fighting with us and distract them from what’s happening in the facility.”
