How Do Designers Come Up With New Ideas?
Have you ever wondered how designers and other creative people keep coming up with one idea after another? As an interior designer for over 35 years, I have designer projects all over the US but until a client recently asked me that question, I never even thought about it!
But today, I’d like to explore that topic with you. So even if you’re not particularly creative, and wish you were, maybe this can help you.
3 Top Tips For Generating New Ideas
Something that I’ve noticed is that when I am challenged by a big project, I find myself saying things like “I have no idea how to do this, but I’m going to figure it out,” or “I’ve never done this before but I’m going to give it my best shot.” Based on this, I believe there may be 3 key ingredients to generating multiple new ideas.
1. Be Open To New Ideas And Fearless
Ask questions like “What if,” and “What would it be like…” As an example, my downsizing journey was an adventure in being completely open to “What would it be like to live with a lot less” (95% less)?
Asking that question provided a whole new less cluttered life!
2. Be Curious
Let your imagination run wild. Imagine what’s possible. Start to see things with new eyes.
The ability to see things differently or, as my son would say, the ability to “see through walls,” is important. You need to be able to look beyond the current circumstances and conditions. Think beyond “the walls.” Begin to generate as many ideas as you can and then test them out and move forward as needed.
3. Have A Good “Toolkit”
My #1 tool is to ask questions. Asking questions helps me better step into someone’s shoes and walk around in them. This ultimately helps me better understand their “pain” so I can help design a solution.
