CHAPTER 1 - Fearful Reflection
If they knew my secret, would they still love me? I’ve tried scraping the thought from my mind a thousand times before, but it always comes back when I least expect it.
A sudden vibration from below has frozen my quiet confidence suspending my forward movement with only a single ring. I know I should answer it, but my frightened eyes resurrect a childlike reflection of unmistakable fear.
I put his number in my phone years ago, but it’s the first time I saw the name appear with my own eyes. It’s the one number I’ve never called and the one person I dread talking to the most.
My veiny hands clutch the edge of the solid oak dresser as I forcibly remove the thick varnish one layer at a time. The scratching sound of chewed up fingernails elevates my stubbly chin from my chest, pulling self-hatred from a forgotten past.
My twilight grey Armani bow tie rests on the perfect angle around my pulsating neck like the folded wings of an emerging butterfly. The generous amount of greasy gel hardens around my silvery brown hair like a teflon-coated covering of self-loathing.
The snow-white ruffled collar shirt is wrinkle-free, and my freshly steamed charcoal grey dress pants I grabbed from the back of my walk-in closet have the perfect crease down the side of my trembling leg.
The chilly stream of sweat forming underneath my arms makes its descent to my pale palms as the phone finally returns to a dark, faceless friend.
