Kiwa-no Saku

One of the Jōsaku (城柵) vanguard fortresses established by the Yamato (now Nara in central Japan). ‘jō’ means ‘castle’, and ‘saku’ means ‘fence’. They were, in a sense, fortified colonial towns in the then unexplored area in the Tōhoku (north-eastern) region which was then home to the native “Emishi” tribes.
