One of the Jōsaku (城柵) vanguard fortresses established by the Yamato (now Nara in central Japan). jō means castle, and saku means fence. They were, in a sense, fortified colonial towns in the then unexplored area in the Tōhoku (north-eastern) region which was then home to the native Emishi tribes.
