Interview with Kaylene Winter, LIMITLESS
Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series? LIMITLESS is book 2 in my Less Than Zero Rockstar Romance Series. LIMITLESS is the flip side of the coin from ENDLESS and follows the romance between Jace Deveraux, LTZ’s drummer and Alex LeRoux, travel blogger extraordinaire. I wanted to tell a story about two sexy friends whose love grows into everlasting commitment over the span of their new adult lives.
Do you have a favorite character?
Alex is inspired by my BFF from childhood. Alex is playful, fun, takes no prisoners, fair and beautiful, of course. She’s a girl’s girl, her BFF Zoey and her have a delightfully supportive relationship. She also stands up for what she believes in, especially with the sexy, drummer Jace.
Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all?
Carter, the “godfather” of LTZ is in a historical (fictional) Seattle band called Limelight. His son, Zane is LTZ’s lead guitar player. Carter’s influence – both good and bad – really helps LTZ and hurts them, his impact is felt throughout the series.
Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?
No, I did this for me. I wanted to have a creative outlet and test the waters. With the overwhelmingly positive response, I’m really enjoying the self-publishing route – of course would also potentially consider working with agents/publishers if the opportunity arises.
If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?
As an advertising/marketing major, I am EXTREMELY involved in all things visual. I really dug deep and researched cover designers on books I loved to find my cover designer. Then I realized what a stand-out photographer she is, so now she’s my everything.
What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?
I’m still running a business full-time and have a very busy philanthropic schedule. I try to write an hour a day, and spend Sundays getting my marketing and promotion together for the week.
I’m really used to distractions, so while my preference is to have quiet when I write – I can do it anywhere. Some of my best steamy scenes were written sitting on the couch while my husband was watching some show on TV like American Pickers or Deadliest Catch.
Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
When I first started on this journey, I wrote a few authors I admired and asked them for one piece of advice. They all universally said – get a professional editor. So I hired my editor Grace Bradley, and that was quite possibly the best decision I ever made. Working with her was amazing – I’m not someone who gets bent out of shape about this or that. Her advice, comments, recommendations – and chastising (I’m terrible about misplaced metaphors) have made me infinitely a better writer.

Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?
YES! Because I’m so new to all of this, I just feel like I’m right under water every minute of the day. Between learning about Amazon ads and different types of promotions, I’ve been like a newborn fawn.
Besides writing, do you have any other passions?
My husband and I love to travel all over the world, and we love to eat chef-tasting menus in fancy restaurants. We also adore our 2 year old Siberian Husky, and take trips all over Washington with him. He even has his own Instagram! (boudithehusky)
