Whoa, bizarro. You have a natural tendency to want to help people, but this guy really sounds like trouble. In retrospect I guess one could say, "I don't know people's views, but you can see the lawn signs." I would have tried to answer honestly, like you, but I think you are right. This guy was bad news. Your town has been in the paper repeatedly because of those fires, so I think it has drawn unsavory attention.
