It's Groundhog's Day- A guest post from Emily Cale!
It's Groundhog Day! You probably already knew that, but in case you haven't had enough coffee yet this morning, I wanted to make sure we started out on the same page. Now that we're all caught up, I thought I might tell you a thing or two about today that you might not know.
*The ceremonies take place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. There is pretty much nothing else in this tiny town (sorry to anyone who lives there, but this is true).
*Phil is the name of the groundhog.
*The same groundhog has been predicting the weather since the 1800s. It's true. Each year the inner circle in charge of his care feed him a secret potion which makes him live 7 more years.
*Someone must have been asleep at the wheel one year because they have on occasion pulled a dead groundhog out of the box at the ceremony.
*Unlike in the movie, the true ceremony takes place at Gobbler's Knob, an grassy area just outside the town.
*Though Phil claims to be the only weather forecasting groundhog, there are actually a few more in the world. These include Staten Island Chuck (Staten Island, New York), General Beauregard Lee (Lilburn, Georgia), Balzac Billy (Balzac, Alberta), Buckeye Chuck (Marion, Ohio), and Shubenacadie Sam (Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia).
I must admit to going on year. It was terrible. My friends and I left Pittsburgh at 1AM, arrived at 2:30AM and stood outside in nearly 6F weather until 7 when he finally told us winter would last another six weeks (thanks for that Phil). We also made the mistake of standing on the non-family side of the field. We got the joy of hanging out with drunk college kids who past the time by making little ice rivers in the dirt by peeing (both the boys and the girls).
Okay, so what does any of this have to do with my book? Pretty much nothing. Thought if might be a good story though. So, now I'll tell you something about my newest release.
