How Many Characters Do You Kill Off in a Thriller Novel?

I've had this question posed to me recently and I had to stop and really think about it. How many characters are too many and how many are not enough to kill off in a thriller novel?

My first answer was… I'm not really sure. I don't think there is a special number of appropriate deaths for thriller novels.

Robert Mead When I wrote my first mystery novel I killed off three characters. Upon review, a well established writer suggested I double the death count to maintain interest throughout the book, which i did! In my case I believe it improved the book, but I don't think there's any fast rule...

Kathleen I average three murders per book. But I don't think there is a hard and fast rule. It's just what the plot dictates.
