Have you ever felt like tearing a strip off someone? Try sarcasm.
Sarcasm comes from Greek
sarx (flesh) and
sarkazein (to speak bitterly, sneer; literally, to strip off the flesh). Greek
sarkazein is the source of Greek
sarkasmos, Latin
sarcasmus, and by the 1570s, the English word
sarcasmus (a sneer, jest, taunt, mockery) which by the 1610s was spelled sarcasm. Greek
sarx is not only the root of sarcasm but also of sarcoma (fleshy substance; later, a tumor).
