How Tapping Helped a High School Student Control Her Anxiety and Asthma

Mia* is a New York City 18-year-old high school senior with a history of severe asthma and migraine headaches.

In April Mia began experiencing COVID-like symptoms that became serious enough to require immediate medical attention.

At that time during the height of the novel Coronavirus pandemic in New York City, all the emergency departments had large outdoor tents set up outside. The tents were specifically for patients who had COVID symptoms that did not require immediate hospitalization. Mia went to the emergency department and was assessed in the tents by the team of medical personnel who were staffing the tent, and then she followed up afterward with a medical student by telephone with daily check-up calls for 2 weeks.

The medical student assessed Mia’s progress, documenting what she said, and then called physician Dr. Melanie A. Gold, who is a professor of pediatrics at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and medical director of New York Presbyterian Hospital’s seven school-based health centers in Harlem, Washington Heights, Inwood, and the Bronx.

“Mia needs a refill of her inhaled steroid prescription,” the message said: “Could you refill this for her?” After electronically sending Mia’s prescription orders to the pharmacy, Dr. Gold called Mia by phone to discuss her asthma and ask about what she was doing to help manage her symptoms.

The Breakthrough

Dr. Gold asked if she had meditated before. Mia said she had explored meditation, and she didn’t think it had helped her. Then Dr. Gold offered and sent Mia the link to The Tapping Solution app and mentioned the “Releasing Anxiety” meditation and “Coronavirus Stress: Release Constricted Breathing” meditation.

Mia used The Tapping Solution App while waiting for her inhaled steroid to work because it takes like a week or so to kick in. “It’s really good to know that I always have the Tapping App,” she told Dr. Gold when they communicated the next day on the phone. “Can I use Tapping for other things?”

“Like what?” Dr. Gold asked.

“Well, I get migraine headaches,” Mia said.

“Yes,” Dr. Gold told her. “Go for it – there’s a specific meditation called ‘Support Your Healing: Headaches.’

So, Mia used that meditation next, and it worked well for her “Can I use The Tapping Solution if I can’t fall asleep at night?” she asked Dr. Gold the next time they talked on the phone.

“What’s happening at bedtime when it’s time to go to sleep?” Dr. Gold asked.

“I have a racing mind! It won’t stop – it just keeps going,” Mia responded.

“There is a Tapping Solution meditation on ‘Quiet My Racing Mind.’” Dr. Gold said.

Mia recently told Dr. Gold that Tapping has helped her to stop her mind from racing so much, which makes it easier for her to fall asleep at bedtime. She said she’s glad she has this tool to help with her anxiety, migraine headaches, and asthma symptoms too.

Dr. Gold has mentioned that the younger children she has introduced to The Tapping Solution app love it, and they enjoy following and repeating the phrases as they tap. She explained that older adolescents and teens may start off curious and slightly skeptical, but after they have done a round or two of a Tapping meditation that most of them have found some positive relief of their symptoms.
