Tomorrow only - Wednesday August 12 - George Effinger's Budayeen Cycle will be downpriced through Open Road Media, to $4.99, US and Canada.
If you're not familiar with George's cyberpunk writing, this is the place to begin. He set out, he told me, to do a Raymond Chandler imitation, in a science fictional city that is very obviously New Orleans (though it is set in an un-named Islamic country and simply referred to as The City); "When Gravity Fails" succeeds very well at being excellent film noir. He explores that world more thoroughly in "Fire in the Sun" and "Exile Kiss," and of course his writing is always entertaining. It's always amused me that he predicted both cell phones and the collapse of the Soviet Union years before either appeared.
