What books have sustained you this year?

View this email in your browserDear Friends, The week has been such a strange one with coronavirus numbers climbing just as I’d begun to hope that things were getting better. I’ve felt a nervousness and an agitation I’ve found hard to quell. Writing has helped. It’s one of the things that can still my often too busy mind. Reading helps, too: both on paper and on audiobook. This week I’ve escaped into the world of 1940s female pilots as I’ve been listening to Natasha Lester’s new novel The Paris Secret. There is something about audiobooks that brings me back to childhood: to be told a story is to feel secure, to feel cocooned. At Thursday Book Club this week, I’d like to find out which books have sustained you during these coronavirus times. Join us to have your say – or send me an email with your recommendations and I’ll include them in next week’s newsletter.Drop in to Thursday Book Club as you can – it doesn’t matter if you’re late or have to leave early. My recommendation
I’ve been thinking about books that have nurtured me and, in that vein, this week’s recommendation is Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey. When the author is bedridden through illness, a woodland snail takes up residence beside her. What follows is the most beautiful meditation on resilience and fortitude and survival.
