The problem with law enforcement
Recently I was given the opportunity to do an author interview. At the end of the questions, they asked if there was anything else I wanted to add. I created my own question and answered it. However, the interviewers decided it was too political and did not want to publish it. I had no problem with that and am grateful for the opportunity of an interview. However, I feel the question has merit and it deals with the subject of my crime novel, One on One, so I thought I would post the question here.
Tell me what you think. Agree, disagree, or no opinion.
How do you feel about the current atmosphere of law enforcement?
There's a lot going on right now that I don't agree with. The 'defund the police' movement is one of those things. I believe that the officers who do wrong should be punished. However, that should not include every other officer who has done nothing wrong.
People don't realize how much dedication it takes to work in law enforcement. They see the headlines with officers doing horrible things and think that it represents a majority of law enforcement. The truth is those headlines only represent around 2% of the total people working in law enforcement. The other 98% are hard-working men and women that do a tough job day in and day out. They don't get rewarded beyond their meager pay and they don't grab headlines. They deal with incredibly stressful situations on a daily basis. They have some of the highest divorce and suicide rates of any profession. Then, on top of that, they have to watch the media degrade them as a profession because of a small percentage of troublemakers.
You'll never see a story in the media about a Correction Officer helping an inmate get his GED. You'll never see a story about a Corrections Officer being assaulted and sent to the hospital because an inmate didn't like what was on his lunch tray. You'll never see a story about an Officer risking their life to save an inmate who was trying to commit suicide.
Those things happen all the time, but they don't grab headlines, so people don't know. Corrections especially is a career that people don't want to hear about. The difficulties that Corrections Officers face every day, the potential for assault, taking a disease home to their families because an inmate exposed them to it, isn't something people want to talk about. They just want to know that the inmates are locked up.
I've always said that Corrections Officers are like the offensive linemen in football. When they're doing their job right no one notices. It's only when they mess up that everyone sees them and gets upset.
If there's an accident on the highway we don't dismantle the highway.
If a plane crashes we don't destroy every other plane so that it won't happen again.
Making law enforcement go away won't make crime go away. It'll do quite the opposite.
Tell me what you think. Agree, disagree, or no opinion.
