Eva’s Byte #272 – The Challenge

“Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory.” (George S. Patton)

Last Thursday, my 15-year-old, black&white female cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Since then, like so many other pet owners doing their best to follow their veterinarian’s instructions, I’ve accepted the challenge of administering medication.

For several days, the regimen has involved prying Hope’s mouth open to squirt 1 ml. of Amoxi twice daily until gone; popping 1 tablet of Felimazole once daily for the next 14 days prior to her follow-up visit.

Mercifully, there’s only one more dose of the liquid antibiotic to give. Yet, it’s a given I’ll be administering a pill every day for the rest of her life. So be it.

Each day involves a sparring of wits between cat and human because the previous day’s ploy to lure and grab Hope have grown stale. Manipulating a manipulator is going to be a continuous challenge I’ve accepted in order to improve her quality of life. Thus far, placing two treats far enough away for her to crawl out from under the bed, has been working for me.

In my capacity as writer, I began drafting chapter 52, Part 3 of my work in progress. Since this section involves back stories taking place during the Sixties, I’ve challenged myself to infuse just the right amount of information pertaining to the Vietnam War as it relates to one of my characters.

A writer who sets the bar high for every turn of phrase, I hope to meet the challenges posed by my characters along their journey to the finish line.

Hook or by crook, by golly—I will meet the daily challenge of popping a pill down the hatch of my beloved furry companion, and feel the exhilaration of victory.

*Thank you for reading to the end.
